WLE Rally Timed Trial 2011
The WLE Rally Timed Trial organised by Forest of Dean Motor Club, held on 29th October featured six stages all centred around the Sweet lamb Rally Complex, Nr Llangurig
Three LCMC crews ventured to the Mid Wales venue to take on the challenging route set out by the organisers.
First home in the CANVAS CO Ford MK2 Escort, was John Worthing
.
Starting the event at car 22, the crew had a superb day. It could have been even better if they had not caught up the sponsors Subaru Impreza “Not being driven as Prodrive intended!!”
Following a spin and a stall on stage one which cost the crew maybe 20-25 seconds, they still finished a respectable 13th overall and 3rd in class.
One place behind them in the MGZR was Dominic Scott and Chris Ridge. A last minute entry from the pair meant a bit of last minute preparation from Weaver Motorsport, never the less they finished 14th overall and winning their class by over seven minutes.
Last of the Club members home were new members Charlie Robinson and Marcus Morphew in the Peugeot 205 GTi.Robinson and Morphew had a testing time during the event, plagued by minor mechanical problems. The Peugeot 205 suffered ignition switch failure on the convoy (sighting) run of the stage leaving the pair stranded and needing a quick fix, as well as meaning the young crew would enter the first stage almost blind compared to other competitors.Stage 1 saw the crew set a respectable time considering their earlier problems, with Robinson learning the surface having never rallied on gravel before.
The second stage saw the crew stepping up the pace. However entering a water splash too fast would leave the Peugeot with no electrical power, again stranding them on the road side. Some quick thinking by the crew led to them getting going again. They had haemorrhaged so much time that any chances of an impressive overall result were gone by this early stage.
The crew carried on and with nothing to lose put on a great show for the many spectators, entertaining with their 'flat out' approach and flamboyant driving style. Robinson commented on the day 'It's been fairly frustrating to have had a few tedious problems but as they say 'that's rallying' The organisers have provided an excellent event and we'll be back next year with more water resistant electrics, and with the same target of entertaining the crowds and having fun ourselves. The crew finished a respectable 28th overall and 3rd in class.
Ludlow Castle Motor Club have several crews competing on the Rally GB National event on November 11th, 12th, and 13th. Follow their progress at www.ludlowcastlemotorclub.co.uk
